ACCIONA attended the 7th Forum for the European project entitled “Supervision and Environmental Monitoring of River Training and Dredging Works on Critical Sectors on the Danube River” on 25 October in Novi Sad (Serbia).
The project, which will primarily benefit the Serbian Ministry of Transport that is ultimately the authority responsible for the Danube river basin in the country (PLOVPUT), seeks to provide technical and environmental support under FIDIC standards to the execution of works to dredge over 496,000 m3 of material to improve maintenance of the river’s shipping channel. Construction of eight new structures (groynes and chevrons) has also been necessary to achieve this goal.
During the event, the ACCIONA team presented the current status of the works and the results from the environmental monitoring in the Futog and Čortanovci sectors, two of the six critical sectors in which work has been undertaken so far.
ACCIONA has carried out various activities as part of this environmental monitoring, such as hydromorphological water and sediment analysis and status assessments on various protected species (plants, birds, mussels and fish and phytoplankton).
The forum was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Finance (CFCU), the Ministry of Construction and PLOVPUT, and the Province of Vojvodina, as well as the International Danube River Commission. Following the presentation of the results, the attendees visited the structures that have been built in the Futog sector.
This project is the first contract in Serbia for ACCIONA’s engineering business.
