ACCIONA completes the works on the South Building of the Philippe Pinel psychiatric hospital in Chile

  • The catering, laundry and office units, which will support the hospital’s operations, will be delivered to the Aconcagua Health Service in the next few weeks
  • Luis Castillo, Undersecretary for Healthcare Networks, confirmed the progress of the construction works

ACCIONA has completed the initial works of the Dr. Philippe Pinel Psychiatric Hospital refurbishment project in the city of Putaendo, in the Valparaíso region of Chile. The announcement was made by the Undersecretary of Healthcare Networks, Luis Castillo, after a visit to the new facilities of this healthcare centre.

The first part of the facilities will be delivered to the Aconcagua Healthcare Service ready to start operations in the coming weeks. The works relate to the South Building, which will house the catering and laundry units.

The first stage of the hospital refurbishment works include the adaptation and reconditioning of six buildings, which are now 47% complete, with the South Building being the first to be delivered.

“At the request of the healthcare authority, we have focused our construction efforts on the facilities needed to provide operational support to the functioning of the hospital. We have now entered a really dynamic construction phase, which will allow the Putaendo community, the workers at the hospital and its patients to begin to see the concrete and tangible progress of the new facilities for this complex”, explained ACCIONA’s construction manager, David Jiménez.

From the second half of this year, ACCIONA will progressively deliver the remaining facilities to the health service, including the main lobby, which connects all of the buildings of the hospital complex; the pharmacy building (west); two wings for treating psychiatric patients (southwest and northwest); and the administration building.

The reconditioning of the Philippe Pinel Hospital includes the complete structural reinforcement of the complex to improve its resistance to earthquakes. New communication and circulation routes will be constructed, such as elevators and exterior passageways, which will connect all three levels of the complex.

The remodelling works, which must be completed by 2020, will maintain the hospital’s original architecture, which was constructed in the 1930s and delivered in October 1940 for use as the Putaendo bronchopulmonary sanatorium. Its architectural design is unique in the country and it represents a significant piece of heritage for the Putaendo commune and Chile’s healthcare in general.

ACCIONA is experienced in constructing hospital infrastructures in the country. Construction of the Exequiel Gonzalez Cortés paediatric hospital was completed at the end of 2017, in the commune of San Miguel, Santiago, and this year it will begin construction of the Marga Marga Hospital in the commune of Villa Alemana in the Valparaíso region.
