Pedro Rollán, Acting President of the Regional Government of Madrid, visited one of the works on 17 July that ACCIONA is carrying out for Canal de Isabel II on the Paseo de la Castellana. He was accompanied on the visit by Luis Castilla, CEO of the Infrastructures division of ACCIONA, and Rafael Prieto, executive vice-chairman of Canal de Isabel II.
This project primarily consists of modernising the network and improving the distribution gallery in Paseo de la Castellana.Specifically, it involves replacing 1.84 km of pipes between calle Félix Boix, calle Raimundo Fernández Villaverde and calle Joaquín Costa, requiring an investment of more than €6 million.
To carry out these highly complex works, and in order to minimise disruption to these public spaces as much as possible, ACCIONA is carrying out the works underground, with eight access shafts along the route, as well as replacing a 700 mm and a 900 mm diameter pipe with a single 1,200 diameter pipe.
At present, the Paseo de la Castellana works are 15% complete and are scheduled to finish in the second half of 2020, benefiting the 800,000 people that are served by this network.
These works are part of the RED Plan, an initiative included in Canal de Isabel II’s Strategic Plan to improve the quality of water consumed in the city by replacing obsolete materials. Some 3,200 km of pipes in the region will be renewed under this plan by 2030.
The first phase of the RED Plan will end in 2024 and consists of replacing 1,500 km of pipeline, while the remaining 300 km will be carried out under existing contracts or contracts yet to be tendered.
