  • Fernando Vara, Follo Line Project Manager at ACCIONA, presented the various big data programs used for data management on the project being constructed by the company in Norway

ACCIONA took part in the World Tunnel Congress, the most important international event for this sector, which this year took place in Naples between 3 and 9 May.

During the six-day congress, experts in tunnels and underground spaces from around the world met to present and discuss the latest innovations and the future of the sector.

Fernando Vara, Follo Line Project Manager at ACCIONA, gave a talk entitled “Integrated Big Data Management System on a Complex Tunnelling Project with Boring Machines. Analysis of data from the Follo Line Project”.

In his talk, he explained how the “Smart City” concept was applied to the Follo Line Project, comparing it to a “small smart city” dealing with complicated logistics for production management, traffic control, security and cost control.

Fernando Vara presented the digital platform that ACCIONA developed specifically for the Follo Line Project, which enables all this data, updated in real time from the work site, to be managed more efficiently.

The software allows the enormous data volume generated every day by the tunnel boring machines and the lining segment factories to be integrated into a single platform for analysing and drafting reports, reducing resources and potential human error. This digital tool also enabled project information to be shared, making it freely available to the entire team working on the project.

Information about the cutter maintenance application developed by Acciona’s IT team was also presented, which led to cost reductions and performance enhancements for cutter maintenance on the tunnel boring machines used for the Follo Line.

The efficiency of the entire production cycle has been improved thanks to the use and integration of innovation and new technologies into the project’s daily production activities. Costs and timescales were also reduced, while improving safety.

THE PROJECT: FOLLO LINE RAILWAY TUNNELS

ACCIONA and its partner, the Italian company Ghella, are constructing what will be the longest railway tunnels in Scandinavia for the Follo Line Project, the largest transport infrastructure project undertaken in Norway to date.

These two twin tunnels, each 19.5 km long with an internal diameter of 8.8 metres, will connect the city of Oslo with the town of Ski, establishing a central axis for intercity development to the south of the Norwegian capital.

Designed for trains running at 250 km/h to carry passengers between the two locations, both tunnels were drilled by four enormous double-shield tunnel boring machines, each one 150 metres long and weighing 2,400 tonnes.

The AGJV consortium will also construct all the railway installations, except the signalling systems. Resilient transport infrastructures for promoting well-being and progress by Norwegian society.

THE WORLD TUNNEL CONGRESS

Organised by the International Tunnelling Association (ITA), the World Tunnel Congress is the most prestigious event in the tunnelling sector.

More than 1,500 engineers and professionals attended the 2018 event, held in Dubai (United Arab Emirates), to hear about the latest trends and innovations, and every year this event highlights the importance of tunnels for sustainable cities of the future.
