ACCIONA completes the test phase of the beam launcher it has designed and manufactured for Cebú Bridge in the Philippines

  • The design, manufacture and testing has been carried out at the Central Workshops of the company's construction business in Madrid. After working for seven months on the launcher, it has now been dispatched to the project in the Philippines.


ACCIONA has completed the testing of one of the key elements for the construction of Cebú Bridge in the Philippines, a new beam launcher that the company has been designing and manufacturing for the past seven months.

Following the testing phase in Madrid, ACCIONA has now begun the process of transferring the launcher to the project, where it will be assembled and load-tested on site.

The launcher, designed by ACCIONA’s engineering team, is capable of launching and assembling beams weighing up to 110 tonnes and up to a maximum length of 52 metres on ascending gradients (climbing) and descending gradients (falling) up to 7%.

The launcher uses an innovative rack and pinion system that improves the safety and precision of the operation and provides full control on gradient sections, avoiding the risks associated with conventional systems that use capstans and cables.

The launcher has been manufactured at the Central Workshops of ACCIONA’s construction business in Madrid. It has taken more than 25,000 man hours to create, mainly to construct the core structure, which weighs a total of 280 tonnes.

ACCIONA and its partners will use a total of 470 beams to construct Cebú Bridge, which will be 2,670 metres long.

This beam launcher, which is unique in the sector, illustrates the differentiating value that ACCIONA provides by being capable of solving the challenges presented by a project using its own material and human resources, making it an international leader in the Self Performing Office (SPO) model.


The project: Cebú Bridge, Philippines

At the end of 2017, ACCIONA and its partners in the Cebu Link Joint Venture (CLJV) were awarded the contract to design and construct the new bridge between Cebú and Córdova in the Philippines, worth US$400 million.

The project, which is currently being constructed by CLJV in conjunction with First Balfour Inc and D.M. Consunji, Inc., consists of a 650-metre cable-stayed bridge as the principal structure, with a main span of nearly 400 metres between pylons. This new infrastructure will also include a two approach viaducts of precast beans totalling 2,185 meters that will be installed using the launching girder as well as a section of highway on a five-kilometre embankment.

This new bridge will bring numerous benefits, including improving the traffic in the region, alleviating the congestion currently suffered on the existing bridges.This infrastructure will also provide a new connection between Cebu’s industrial zone and Mactan International Airport, as well as connecting to Cordova’s new urban developments on Mactan Island, becoming a core communications channel and a feature that will galvanise and boost the local economy.
