REPARA 2.0

Development of new techniques and information systems for the sustainable rehabilitation of road pavements

The REPARA 2.0 project seeks to develop new technologies and methodologies to support infrastructure management and enable the restoration and conservation of all road types with lower costs and a lesser environmental impact, whilst also enhancing road adaptation to climate change. The project is being carried out at a critical time, given the poor state of roads in Spain and in other countries throughout Europe and the world.

The technologies under development in REPARA 2.0 project are the following:

  • Development of new recycled asphalt mixtures implementing up to 100% of recycled materials. These mixtures will be more sustainable and resilient and they will have mechanical properties similar to those of hot mix asphalts. They will be suitable for high-capacity roads and will be produced with low energy consumption, low emissions and at ambient temperature (cold technologies).
  • Manufacturing of new low-noise pavements through the useof recycled mixtures produced at temperatures of less than 100ºC (warm recycled mixtures). In addition to reducing noise, these pavements will not be affected by the durability problems associated with these types of mixtures.
  • The REPARA 2.0 project aims to carry out the first tests in Spain (and amongst the first worldwide) using mixtures with self-healing capacities.
  • Study of new solutions to achieve roads that are more resilient to climate change. One such solution is based on pavements using asphalt mixtures with a low level of heat retention or a greater degree of solar reflectance, without affecting the properties required for user safety. These pavements will be particularly geared towards mitigating the heat-island effect associated with global warming in cities.
  • A test section featuring embedded sensors to enable continuous monitoring of variables that might affect surface degradation will be deployed. Moreover, these test sections will also be monitored by means of an innovative, high-performance system to detect fissures and defects.
  • Study of new dynamic weighting systems capable of calculating the loads carried by heavy vehicles with the necessary precision. Since these vehicles are the main culprits in terms of road surface deterioration, the development of such systems represents a real breakthrough in the control of loads borne by the infrastructure, and they will enable more and better conservation of our roads.
  • Deployment of sensors in embankments will also be studied, with a view to identifying and preventing deterioration caused by slipping.
