DEWI

DEWI (Dependable Embedded Wireless Infrastructure) envisions to signi­cantly foster Europe’s leading position in embedded wireless systems and smart (mobile) environments such as vehicles, railway cars, airplanes and buildings. These environments comprise wireless sensor networks and wireless applications for citizens and professional users.

These environments comprise wireless sensor networks and wireless applications for citizens and professional users.

 

DEWI consortium introduces the concept of a "sensor & communication bubble" featuring:

  • Locally confi ned wireless internal and external
  • Secure and dependable wireless communication and safe operation 
  • Fast, easy and stress-free access to smart environments 
  • Flexible self-organization, re-confi guration, resiliency and adaptability 
  • Open solutions and standards for cross-domain reusability and interoperability 

DEWI identifies and implements an integrated dependable communication architecture using wireless technology capable of replacing the traditional heavy wiring between computers / devices / sensors, and therefore makes possible less expensive and more flexible maintenance and re-configuration. 

Citizens will gain easier, more comfortable, more transparent and safer access to information provided by the “sensor &communication bubble”. 

DEWI will provide a platform and tool-set containing methods, algorithms, prototypes, and living labs solutions for cross-domain re-usability, scalability and open interface standards, and will contribute to the ARTEMIS repository by connecting to other ASP and AIPP initiatives to ensure long-term sustainability and impact towards society. 

Key results of DEWI will be demonstrated in exemplary show cases, displaying high relevance to societal issues and cross-domain applicability, including intelligent maintenance, service car communication, vibration and structural health monitoring, in-vehicle control and software adaption related to e.g. changing road and flight conditions, or increase of energy efficiency and security in buildings and production sites. 

Regarding interoperability, DEWI will also contribute to establishing a standard for wireless systems engineering in a certification and security context which entails conformity to both domain-specific standards and international domain-independent standards.

Project objectives

The overall project goal of DEWI is to provide key technologies and reference architectures with a focus on the sensor & communication bubble the internals of the bubble and its interfaces to the environment, but not beyond.

This means:

  • 1. Dependable, auto-configurable, optionally secure, short-range communication
  • 2. Local energy-management: efficiency, harvesting, storage
  • 3. Localization of sensors and mobile devices
  • 4. Smart composability and integration of wireless sensor networks

DEWI will achieve its objectives through a clearly use-case-oriented and industry-driven approach with the following key success factors to contribute to vertical and horizontal application innovation:

  • Identification and build-up of a common, multi-domain applicable, service-oriented short-range wireless communication architecture that eases the life of citizens and professional users and enables service innovation
  • Driving forward the domain-specific and cross-domain technology items, i.e. re-useable
  • New vertical and multi-domain (horizontal) services that allow to easily integrate new technologies, SMEs, and tool providers
  • Enabling vertical and horizontal business cases representing added value for the transport and building domain
  • Identification of infrastructure requirements within vertical activities (domain specific use cases) to take into account new interaction and interface concepts for proper tackling of cross-domain issues in smart environments
  • Transfer of knowledge and experience between different domains
  • Identification of domain-independent problems to foster cross-domain reusability
  • Providing input to make use of results of and inter-act with other projects (in particular ARTEMIS/ECSEL)
  • Contribution to the ARTEMIS repository by development of results from industry-driven use 
  • Gathering the main European players regarding wireless embedded systems engineering in the areas of transportation and building / surveillance providing a critical mass of European technology providers for future safer, securer, and more comfortable transport and living
  • Exemplary show cases that will demonstrate the key results of DEWI, by displaying high relevance to societal needs and cross-domain applicability
  • Regarding interoperability DEWI will also contribute to establishing a standard for wireless systems engineering in a certification and security context, which entails conformity to both specific standards as well as international domain-independent standards.

ACCIONA main tasks of the Project

ACCIONA is focussed on “WSN for freight advanced monitoring and management” used case.

In actual freight management, the link between wagons, the identification of their physical characteristics and parameters and the control of the status of the freight travelling inside the train composition are mainly mechanical processes. A wireless solution provides easier, quicker and dynamic identification and monitoring of the freight travelling inside the train composition, avoiding complex and expensive installations. This is especially interesting for trains transporting hazardous materials where early status detection is very important in order to run safely.

ACCIONA Infraestructure, in its particular scenario: “Freight Monitoring Optimized in Underground Worksites”, has implemented a prototype capable of managing freight trains at construction work sites, able to prevent disasters and accidents at building (or refurbishment) stage in large underground areas by considering everyday physical parameters of the trains and their loads.

DEWI es un proyecto europeo en cooperación del que forma parte Acciona Infraestructuras, constituido por 58 entidades, que recibe financiación mixta de Artemis JU y del Ministerio de Industria, Energía y Turismo, en el marco del programa europeo Artemis (www.artemis-ju.eu), que define e implementa la Agenda de Investigación para el desarrollo de tecnologías clave en el campo de los sistemas de computación embebidos.
