ACCIONA Construction is taking part in the European research project ENDURCRETE, financed by the European Commission as part of the HORIZON 2020 programme. The main objective is to develop a new reinforced, sustainable, profitable and long-lasting concrete for industrial, civil and maritime structures.
The research focuses on minimizing the competitive disadvantages of traditional concrete, such as the heavy consumption of mineral, energy and fuel resources associated with the production process, or the emission of greenhouse gases derived from this process.
The work will focus on developing a new cement low in clinker (the main component in this material) by integrating high-value industrial by-products and using new nanotechnologies and hybrid systems that guarantee greater durability of the concrete structures.
ACCIONA Construction is leading the prototype demonstration and validation phase, which will take place at four sites with highly aggressive environments: the facilities at La Fundación Santa Bárbara (Ribera del Folgoso-León); the dock at the Port of Gijón “El Musel” (Spain); one of the KVAER shipyards in Stord (Norway) and the Krk bridge, located on the Adriatic Sea (Croatia).
The ENDURCRETE project has an estimated budget of nearly €6 million. Fifteen other entities are also participating in this project from different European countries, in addition to ACCIONA Construction.
